Home for the first time

Ankerdeern, 51 years, Hamburg Mitte

The North drew me here – to this very city and the water and the Kiez¹ . I was always up here anyway and already had close ties. I then worked for a long time directly in the Kiez. By now, I’m ‘off the Kiez ’, as we say, and I enjoy my beloved Hamburg in a completely different, more intense way, with much more time and far more relaxation. A “Nordlicht²”, a true Hamburger, you either are or you’re not, it’s in you, no matter where you’ve lived before. Hamburg is home and anchor and freedom.

There are some words and terms in the text that not everyone may be familiar with. That’s why we’ve explained them here.

¹Kiez – usually refers to St. Pauli, Hamburg’s entertainment and red-light district.

²Nordlicht – refers to someone who feels at home in northern Germany.
